Managing Your Holiday Anxiety: 4 Self-Care Strategies

 

The holidays allow us to pause and truly take time to connect with our families, friends, and loved ones. However, for many of us, it can also mean a great deal of anxiety that stems from myriad sources, such as:

-having to prepare for and host a large holiday party;

-the stressors of financially overextending ourselves on gifts;

-long-distance travel by way of plane, train, or automobile; or

-having to endure those family members that we may truly love, but don’t particularly like or enjoy.

And these are just a few of the reasons that we feel more nervous during this merriest of seasons.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY ANXIETY

Below are four tips to help you manage this anxiety.

Tip #1: Get sufficient sleep.

The holidays tend to take you out of your regular routine. You and/or your family may not have to get up early to go to work or school, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw your schedule out the window, sleep in until noon, and stay up late. It’s important to get enough sleep every night. Research suggests that sleep deprivation can actually cause more anxiety. So try to stick as much as possible to a regular schedule and get enough sleep so you can recharge your brain, improve your focus, and elevate your mood.

Tip #2: Eat as healthily as possible.

At this time of year, we’re surrounded by candies, chocolates, cakes, and more! As much as possible, try not to overindulge on the sweet treats. While sugar doesn’t cause anxiety, it can make your symptoms worse. Eat balanced meals, and perhaps a small sweet after dinner. This will avoid the rush of energy and sugar crash you get when you go straight to dessert on an empty stomach.

Tip #3: Don’t stop exercising.

If physical activity is a part of your usual routine, it’s important you stick to it during the holiday season. It’s very easy decide to treat yourself by taking a day or week off from the gym. But physical activity works as an excellent anxiety management tool. It takes your mind off your frustrations, and releases mood-enhancing endorphins.

Tip #4: Take a few minutes every day to meditate.

Not only should you foster a healthy body, but you should also foster a healthy mind. One great way to combat and relieve the holiday jitters is to indulge in just a few minutes of meditation every day. Not only will it decrease any depression you may be experiencing, but it has been proven to make people more resilient to stress, reduce stress levels, and relieve emotional pain, all of which will make you much more compassionate to those around you.

So breathe deeply, be present, tune into your body, and remember during those tough anxiety-riddled moments that we all want the same thing. If you’re feeling hurt by a family member, understand that they, like you, are doing the best they can. Pause to center yourself (leave the room if you have to), clear your mind of the overwhelm, and let the feelings and emotions pass through you.

Anxiety can be crippling. It can make people afraid to fly on planes or have trouble meeting new people. Often a sign of depression, anxiety can cause people to stop taking chances in life for fear of failure, of judgment or other irrational fears.

Thoughts are powerful, even when they are not psychic. Certain thoughts can make you feel physically ill, just as certain thoughts can make you feel anxious and stressed. How you see the world, how you view yourself in it, how you talk to yourself internally, all impact how you feel emotionally.

One thing I have learned in my struggles to overcome anxiety is that if I can change my thoughts, I can change my mood and enable myself to heal, both physically and spiritually. If I can catch myself in the midst of a negative thought, I can turn it around into a positive one. If I fear something, I know I need to set small goals to face that fear head on.

If someone says something unsupportive or rude about my abilities, I can choose to let it go immediately and not let it impact me. Only when you truly understand where your own anxieties come from, can you completely let them go and move towards healing and developing your psychic intuition.

There are other ways to help reduce stress and anxiety during the healing process and which can help you boost your psychic intuition. Guided meditation is one of those ways. I can recall hearing about one such guided meditation that really worked for a friend of mine. At night before sleep, or any time she had a moment to lay comfortably and relax, she would play a cd that would ask her to picture herself at the bottom of a mountain, about to trek up to the top. Before she started walking, she would have to pick up and put on a heavy backpack filled with her anxieties. All her fears and all her doubts were stuffed inside of it and she had to begin lugging them all up the mountain.

However, the higher she went, the more anxieties she was able to empty out of her back pack. As she got closer and closer to the top, she would take out an anxiety and throw it down the side of the mountain, letting it go completely. She said she would begin to feel lighter and lighter with each mental step. By the time she reached the top of the mountain, she was free of all her anxieties.

Now, of course, change doesn’t happen overnight, but if you want to develop psychic intuition you have to be determined enough to face your anxieties head on in order to reach your full potential. Especially if your anxieties revolve around your psychic ability. When you let go of your fears and anxieties and stop letting other people influence your actions and thoughts, you will gain the confidence and inner calmness you need in order to thrive, both spiritually and emotionally.

The biggest problem that inhibits the healthy functioning of your intuition and psychic ability is anxiety.. There are several reasons why anxiety has a negative effect on intuition. When someone is psychically sensitive and encouraged to use his or her intuition, they learn to trust it and become adept at using psychic ability. If that same person were discouraged or ridiculed, and experiencied negative consequences after displaying psychic ability, it conditions him or her to be anxious or shut down whenever they use or have a need to use their intuition.

Why does anxiety suppress intuition? When you’re anxious, you lose confidence and have more self-doubt. If you get discouraged and lose confidence with your intuition, you start shutting down that area in the right brain. Without having the right brain providing input such as “this feels right to me” or “this sounds right to me,” there’s no sensory input to provide a counter balance to your left brain, and your thoughts.

Another example of why anxiety suppresses intuition is when you have irrational fears. Irrational fears corrupt not only your intuition, but can also negatively affect your thinking and your decision-making. Examples of irrational fears are; a fear of making a mistake, a fear of negative consequences, or a fear of looking foolish.

If you want to manage your anxiety so you can improve your intuition and psychic ability – here are several exercises you can do when you’re feeling anxious. Take slow deep breaths all the way down into the diaphragm. After you take ten slow deep breaths, check in to see if your mind is calmer. Repeat as many sets of ten deep breaths as necessary. Check in to see how calm your mind is after each repetition. Another way to still your anxiety is to focus on the toes and the bottom of the feet. Imagine being on the bottom of each toe and then the top of each toe. Then the underside of the foot, the ball of the foot, under the instep, the heel, and the ankle. Work your way up the body. Stop when you reach the top of the head.

It’s risky to use your intuition when you’re stressed. Your intuition works best when you’re relaxed and centered in your body. Unfortunately, sometimes when we’re anxious, we’re not even aware that we’re stressing. Taking slow deep breaths when you’re anxious can help you to return to a high functioning intuitive state.
