When we’re confronted with a decision we need to make, deep down, we always know what the right path is. Problem is, in today’s chaotic world, we’re pulled in so many directions that we’re often disconnected or too busy to really examine how a particular course of action makes us feel. Even just 5 minutes of quiet meditation can help you analyze what you’re feeling – and it is that feeling you need to trust.

#2: Learn from the past, so that you can move forward.

Every single one of us has – and will – face difficult situations in our lives. Depending on our propensity for resilience, we can either dwell on or ignore it (both of which can keep you stuck and susceptible to having the issue repeat itself over and over until you address it), or we can learn the lesson we’re meant to so that we can heal the wound and move forward. If you have had a particularly harrowing event or issue befall you, ask yourself what you’re meant to learn from it, and how it can help you become a stronger person for it.

 #3: Understand that your beliefs are what create your future.

We bring into our lives that which we believe to be true. If you harbor the belief that you are unloveable, it’s almost guaranteed you will not find true love – or if you do, you will give it up because you don’t feel you deserve it. Take the time to examine your beliefs and analyze whether they might not be distorted. Visualize very clearly how you want your life to be – from how you feel, who is in your life and how they make you feel, right down to what you’re wearing and doing. The more believable you make the life you want, the closer you are to making it a reality.

#4: Learn to love yourself before seeking love from others.

This goes hand in hand with #3 above. We all carry baggage that weighs us down, thoughts and beliefs from past experiences and relationships that significantly impact our current lives and relationships.  Meditation will allow you to reflect inwards and challenge the beliefs that do not serve you. Ask yourself whether those who may have hurt you in the past did so because they were hurting. Look in the mirror every morning and tell yourself, “I love and accept you as you are.” Soon enough, you’ll start to believe it – and other people will too.

Another technique I like is to imagine that there is a bright, strong light, such as the sun, shining down on you, entering your body from the top of your head, and filling each body part with its warmth right down to, and out, your feet. As the light washes through you, imagine it cleansing away the day’s thoughts, anxieties, and concerns.

Once you feel calm and relaxed, bring to mind the questions you’ve been pondering about your life’s direction and purpose. See clearly where you are, and ask yourself where you want to be, where you are meant to be. If you want to know what course of action to take with regard to a specific decision, ask now. Wait, and listen to what your intuition – your senses, your feelings – tell you. Be alert to the messages you receive. Managing Your Holiday Anxiety: 4 Self-Care Strategies

 

The holidays allow us to pause and truly take time to connect with our families, friends, and loved ones. However, for many of us, it can also mean a great deal of anxiety that stems from myriad sources, such as:

-having to prepare for and host a large holiday party;

-the stressors of financially overextending ourselves on gifts;

-long-distance travel by way of plane, train, or automobile; or

-having to endure those family members that we may truly love, but don’t particularly like or enjoy.

And these are just a few of the reasons that we feel more nervous during this merriest of seasons.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY ANXIETY

Below are four tips to help you manage this anxiety.

Tip #1: Get sufficient sleep.

The holidays tend to take you out of your regular routine. You and/or your family may not have to get up early to go to work or school, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw your schedule out the window, sleep in until noon, and stay up late. It’s important to get enough sleep every night. Research suggests that sleep deprivation can actually cause more anxiety. So try to stick as much as possible to a regular schedule and get enough sleep so you can recharge your brain, improve your focus, and elevate your mood.

Tip #2: Eat as healthily as possible.

At this time of year, we’re surrounded by candies, chocolates, cakes, and more! As much as possible, try not to overindulge on the sweet treats. While sugar doesn’t cause anxiety, it can make your symptoms worse. Eat balanced meals, and perhaps a small sweet after dinner. This will avoid the rush of energy and sugar crash you get when you go straight to dessert on an empty stomach.

Tip #3: Don’t stop exercising.

If physical activity is a part of your usual routine, it’s important you stick to it during the holiday season. It’s very easy decide to treat yourself by taking a day or week off from the gym. But physical activity works as an excellent anxiety management tool. It takes your mind off your frustrations, and releases mood-enhancing endorphins.

Tip #4: Take a few minutes every day to meditate.

Not only should you foster a healthy body, but you should also foster a healthy mind. One great way to combat and relieve the holiday jitters is to indulge in just a few minutes of meditation every day. Not only will it decrease any depression you may be experiencing, but it has been proven to make people more resilient to stress, reduce stress levels, and relieve emotional pain, all of which will make you much more compassionate to those around you.

So breathe deeply, be present, tune into your body, and remember during those tough anxiety-riddled moments that we all want the same thing. If you’re feeling hurt by a family member, understand that they, like you, are doing the best they can. Pause to center yourself (leave the room if you have to), clear your mind of the overwhelm, and let the feelings and emotions pass through you.
