As the weather warms and we begin thinking about switching to our spring and summer wardrobes, many of us are realizing that our bodies have changed during the winter–all the rich, fattening, and sweet foods of the past holidays have made their presence known on our waistline.
Instead of turning to a restrictive or extreme diet that helps us drop weight only temporarily. It may be time to embrace intuitive eating.
At first glance, your psychic intuition and your diet might not seem to be related. But tapping into your intuition for health purposes is both a well-worn path, and a very good idea for most individuals. Intuitive eating is about deeply listening to your body and its needs. As Boston’s top psychic, I’ve worked with many clients to help them develop intuitive ways to handle nutrition and health.
People who are not eating in tune with their intuition and higher self often swing back and forth between making their food choices based on temporary cravings or opportunity, and between rigid diets where all food choices are proscribed by an outside source.
But when you embrace intuitive eating, you become more deeply in tune with your body and your higher self. You notice what kinds of foods feel nourishing, and you give your body exactly the right amount: eating whenever you’re hungry, and stopping as soon as you are sated.
Here are three examples of when embracing intuitive eating could bring you more health and peace:
Intuitive eating example #1: Special Events
We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve overstuffed ourselves during a party or a holiday event. From an entire box of Valentine’s chocolates to saying yes to third and fourth helpings of buttery mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, special events come with special food concerns.
When you are eating intuitively, however, there’s no restriction and no need for overindulgence. An intuitive eater will listen carefully to the kinds of food their body is craving and eat only the amount that is pleasant to eat–no overstuffing until your belly spills over your waistband.
Intuitive eating example #2: Health Concerns
So much of our overall health is tied up in our digestion and what we eat. When you focus on eating intuitively, though, you begin to learn more about what nutritional needs your body has specifically.
For example, when you are paying deep attention to your body and listening intuitively to its needs, you may discover that you are sensitive to certain foods like wheat or dairy. By eating intuitively, rather than sticking to a proscribed diet, you may find that your body only wants very little of certain foods–or even none at all. Your digestion and overall health may improve as you’re giving your body the things that are easiest for it to digest.
Intuitive eating example #3: Breaking Addictions
So many people engage in bingeing or addictive food behaviors. Ask yourself, are there certain foods that make you feel out of control when you’re eating them? Foods that you don’t keep in the house because you will eat them to the point of being sick or uncomfortable? Have you ever hidden food wrappers or receipts because you were ashamed of the amount you consumed?
If so, intuitive eating may be one part of recovering from addictive food behaviors. When you’re eating intuitively rather than emotionally, you are connected with something more than an ephemeral craving. You take time, focus on the experience of your food, and are alert for the subtle signs from your body that you’re done, or that it’s time to choose a different food.
Your emotions and mind are interested in the pleasure hit that you get from sugary, fatty, or otherwise unhealthy foods. But your body is looking for nourishment. When you slow down and tune in to your intuition, you’ll always be able to make the right choice for you in that time.
Does that mean you’ll never eat cake or fries? No! Your body may sometimes want those things because they taste good, and it’s okay to enjoy food. But when you are listening to your body you’ll be able to slowly savor the food you’re eating, and stop when you’re full, without feeling deprived.
