I see a lot of emphasis on affirmations as a means of developing yourself or growing as a person. So many coaches, self-help authors and other guru types say that affirmations are key to living a better life. But do affirmations really work? Can they change how you act and feel?
The answer is yes, but…
Yes. Affirmations can help you reinforce beliefs about yourself that you want to have. They can help you override negative programming that inhibits your growth. Affirmations can create motivation and focus in times where you need it.
But, there’s more to the story. As Boston’s top psychic, people often come to me because their traditional coping mechanisms aren’t working, or they’re not seeing progress with the methods they’ve learned elsewhere. I often find clients who have relied on affirmations, but are not seeing positive results because they were not taught specifics about how affirmations work. They feel stuck and in need of guidance.
What I’ve discovered in my 25+ years of seeing clients is that affirmations aren’t a cure-all. For them to work, some specific guidelines should be followed.
Boston’s Top Psychic’s Guideline #1: Affirmations Should Be True
Often people are told to create affirmations that state what they would like to happen as if it’s already happened. This ties into the law of attraction and manifestation. In my experience though, affirmations need to be more carefully crafted. They are more about your internal state, rather than what you’re manifesting externally. Manifesting and affirmations are similar, but they aren’t the same.
I recommend that you choose affirmations that are true, but positive. For example, rather than saying “I have all the career success I’ve ever wanted” which sounds good, but may not yet be true, you could say “I am working hard. I deserve to be recognized and rewarded.”
This is both true, and contains positive messages of confidence about the future.
Boston’s Top Psychic’s Guideline # 2: Affirmations Should Be Positive
When working with affirmations and self-talk removing the word “no” or “not” is very helpful. I have found that in both the spiritual and the mental realm, working from a place of what we don’t want or don’t like is going against the current.
For example, as Boston’s top psychic, I connect with the energy of so many people who have asked me to help. When a client is very focused on what they don’t want, as opposed to what they do want, it’s hard to feel their positive outcome flowing towards them. Their energy is one of rejection, and so it can be harder for their desired outcome to be acheived.
Affirmations take place in the spiritual realm using thought energy. It’s not impossible to attract good things using negative affirmations, but it’s like pushing something uphill. It takes way more work.
Choose affirmations that state what you want, not what you reject and everything will flow more easily. “I won’t be bad and eat junk food. I don’t crave sweets,” is not ideal. Instead try, “My body wants healthy food, and I am happy to give it nourishment.”
Boston’s Top Psychic’s Guideline #3: Affirmations Should Be Personal
You should choose affirmations that are in line with your own personal dreams and goals. The more personal and specific you are, the better your results will be.
Studies have actually shown that referring to yourself in the third person when talking to yourself is also helpful. This is an interesting effect, and I believe when you open yourself up to personal affirmations that use your name, you’re more connected with the guidance that you’re receiving from spiritual sources. This is because you are talking to yourself as if you are a friend or relative, which your guides often are.
I am a psychic with decades of experience and intuitive skills that I have honed over my career. For me, my intuition is easier to hear. But everyone receives intuitions, and has differing levels of receptiveness to them.
Call it guidance, call it intuition, but the more you connect with yourself and your internal voice, the better these insights can come across. This can help you develop affirmations that are in line with your highest good.
Don’t be afraid to use these intuitive messages to create affirmations for yourself.
But I know It can be very hard to hear one’s intuition clearly. This is especially true if you have no experience or training in listening to higher consciousness. If you are having trouble connecting, I offer intuitive coaching packages as Boston’s Top Psychic to help you connect to the guidance that is available to you from beyond our natural understanding.
