The best entrepreneurs and executives follow their gut when it comes to matters of business. And with good reason. In one Harvard study of 13,000 executives, respondents said that while they use their analytical abilities as much as their intuitive skills, they credit 80% of their successes to instinct.
Add to this that business magnates from Conrad Hilton to Oprah have described intuition as essential to achieving their goals, and you can see why it’s so important to develop your business intuition. Intuition gives you information – over and above the hard data your brain analyzes – that you wouldn’t normally have access to. It’s a second intelligence, and one you should really pay heed to. And because it’s not something that can be borrowed or bought from someone else, it’s exactly what will set you apart from your competitors.
As Boston’s best psychic, I believe that we all have intuition. The difference is, not everyone hears or listens to it. But there are ways you can develop your business intuition, even if you think you don’t have it. Here are three of my favorites.
#1. Meditate every day.
Even if it’s just a quick 5 or 10 minutes a day, you can access and develop your business intuition through meditation. Tuning into your inner self (and separating temporarily from the outside world), can help you achieve some relief from the daily clutter and noise so you can think clearly, hear your intuition, and make decisions that are in line with your highest, most authentic self.
Take this time in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. If there’s a business decision or issue you’re contemplating, ask that question in this inner space and listen for the messages your intuition communicates to you. There are multiple benefits to doing so, including:
- Making better decisions from a place of calm and peace
- Making quicker decisions with more confidence
- Keeping yourself in the present moment (This helps you to avoid second guessing decisions you made the day or year before)
#2. Listen for your intuition.
In my experience, people receive messages from their intuition in different ways. Here are just a few for you to be aware of.
Pay attention to your body.
Be mindful of the physical cues you receive from your body. Do you feel sensations in your chest? Your stomach? Butterflies? Goose bumps? How does a particular issue or person make you physically feel?
Pay attention to life’s “coincidences.”
For example, say you’re considering expanding your business to another location. Have you just run into an old college friend who, in passing, mentions the availability of what would be a perfect space for your second location? DId you drive by what was always your most desired spot, and see that it now has a for rent or sale sign in the window?
Don’t let these signs pass you by! They are signals that you are in the right place at the right time. And acting on them will often lead you to great success.
Pay attention to subtle messages.
Does a particular book or event or song or acquaintance keep coming up when you’re in different locations? Is the Universe trying to tell you something?
Pay attention to your dreams.
Dreams can often provide you with clues from your subconscious. Your subconscious is a reflection of your highest, most authentic self.
Pay attention to your energy levels.
If you’re considering entering into a new partnership, you’ll want to pay attention to how being around this person makes you feel. Are you energized or depleted?
- Pay attention to the ‘vibes’ you pick up from others.
If you’re hiring new talent, you’re probably aware that sometimes candidates will say the right thing just so they can get the job. If you sense something “off,” know that that feeling is too important not to listen to.
#3. Trust your intuition.
Now that you’ve started listening for it, it’s time to listen to it. Take heed of those “hunches.” If a business decision doesn’t feel right, trust your gut. This is the key to business success.
